Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 during the Olympic event. Bela Karalyi was introduced to Comaneci when she was six. Later, she would be Romania's gymnastics coach. Her first competition was in the National Junior Championships where she placed 13th in the year 1969. In 1970, she was crowned champion. At her first international competition in 1972, she won the event with three gold medals. When she competed for the first time at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals, as well as one silver. She was the first female ever to perform the backwards double salto after dismounting from an unbalanced parallel bar.
